I think that cities are like human beings, because they show their varying personalities to the traveler. Depending on the city and on the traveler, there might begin a mutual love, or dislike, friendship, or enmity.
I’ve been to the city of Bruges so many times, but I keep on falling in love with this historical city. Indeed, it’s my favorite city in Belgium.
The Secrets of Bruges
In a nutshell, Bruges has history, it has art, it has wonderful architecture and it has literature. It is a historic city, but at the same time a contemporary one.
It has most of its medieval architecture intact, making it one of the most well-preserved medieval towns in Europe. The city is a prominent World Heritage Site of UNESCO.
The Inner City Experience
The numerous times that I have been to this medieval city, I have tried different ways of exploring it.
Like aimlessly wandering through the many narrow cobbled streets and medieval buildings. Also through a self guided walking tour and finally, through what every tourist in Bruges do; a boat ride, a horse ride and a tourist city car ride.
Beyond a shadow of a doubt, taking one of the canal guided tour helped me to understand what made the city an important port and a trading center.
I would actually recommend all of them because it’s a great way to see the city from different perspectives. Also each one of them has its own relaxing way to get around. It’s so much fun especially during the Summer.
The Beer Tour
The beer tour around De Halve Maan brewery is really interesting and informative. Here, the visitors learn the history of the brewery and how beer drinking has changed over the years in Belgium.
The beer tasting after the tour is something to look forward to.
The Beer Festival
Bruges has earned a reputation with its long tradition of brewing and café culture. In early February every year, there is an edition of the Bruges Beer Festival. More than 700 breweries take part in the International Beer Festival, and you can sample over 300 beers. More than 10,000 people join in sampling this epic range of beers in historic Bruges. Some local restaurants also produce beer inspired menus and the festivals have events with lectures, debates, and a culinary showcase.
The location of Bruges and Belgium’s efficient train system, makes it an easy day trip from most cities within Belgium. This city truly is a gem, and the local authorities should be praised for their continuing efforts to maintain the city’s architectural integrity. Another reason for you to add this city to your bucket list!

“It is impossible that a city will not play a part in your life, it does not matter whether you have good or bad things to say of it, it draws your mind to it, by a mental law of gravitation.” Isak Dinesen
