City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia

The City of Arts and Sciences is located on the old riverbed of the river Turia.

This is an architectural, cultural and entertainment complex. It was designed by well known Valencian architects.

Indeed, the City of Arts and Sciences is the most modern part of the city of Valencia. Besides, this is the most popular tourist destination of this city and one of the 12 Treasures of Spain.

The complex consists of the following buildings:

✦ 1. Opera House in City of Arts and Sciences

(Spanish: Palau de les Artes Reina Sofía)

This is the most outstanding building in this complex. And t is spectacular in shape, size, and style.

Inside the Opera House, there is a state of the art equipment and exciting programs that you can’t miss pot while in this city.

The building has four auditoriums:

  • Main Room,
  • Master Classroom,
  • Amphitheater
  • Chamber Theater.

The Opera House is dedicated to promoting the music (mainly opera) and the performing arts.


✦ 2.Oceanografic

(Spanish: El Oceanográfico )

This is a marine park in the City of Arts and Science.

In this marine park, visitors can enjoy watching the sea life from the main seas and oceans of the world.

Generally, it is made up of different marine areas that are structured into 2 levels.

These areas also house the exhibitions of typical environments and ecosystems of all over the world oceans and seas.

There are thousands and thousands of different marine species in this aquarium. These include sharks, whales, sea lions, and penguins just to mention but a few.

Last but not least, the marine park has a spectacular dolphinarium and an auditorium.

✦ 3. Prince Felipe Museum of Science

(Spanish: Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe)

This museum is also in the City of Arts and Sciences complex. The structure of this museum looks like a skeleton of a very huge shark or a whale.

Prince Felipe Museum of Science is a huge building that contains interactive science material. These touch on topics like electricity, human body, sound, and light, just to mention but a few.

Most of the exhibitions in this museum are permanent, with a couple of temporary sections.

Some of the exhibits are for purely having fun, while others require some use of common sense. This makes the experience from the museum really fascinating for all ages.

Unlike in the many museums, you are not allowed to touch, this museum allows you to touch, or to pull, or push and also to twist.

✦ 4. The Agora in The City of Arts and Sciences

(Spanish: El Ágora)

The Ágora is a huge metallic structure.

This is a huge arena that is beautifully designed that is meant for events. These include for instance the performances and concerts.

In addition, the roof of the Agora has a movable component that can be opened and closed. And as a result, when it’s closed, it has a maximum height of 70 meters above ground level, and when it’s opened, the maximum height is 85 meters.

✦ 5. Hemisfèric in The City of Arts and Sciences

(Spanish: L´Hemisfèric)

This is a spectacular construction with half an oval-shaped roof of over 100 meters long. This resembles an eye when magnified; meaning that this eye has a lot of wisdom.

This element symbolizes the look and observation of the world that visitors discover through surprising audiovisual projections.

Inside the Hemisfèric, there is a large sphere that houses three projection systems on a concave screen of 900 square meters. These include:

  • IMAX Cinema
  • Planetarium
  • Laserium

✦ 6. The Umbracle

(Spanish: L’Umbracle)

This is a botanical garden that is located in the City of Arts and Sciences.

In a nutshell, the visitors can stroll around and see the typical Mediterranean plants and contemporary sculptures.

Last but not least, visitors can access and enjoy this part of the City of Arts and Science for free.

Some Tips

  • The public car park of the City of Arts and Sciences is located just below the Umbracle
  • It’s a great walk around this complex and to enjoy the views of the nice shallow water pools and a lot of impressive architecture
