First and foremost, for the last few months, we have been avoiding the bucket list approach to our travels. The reasons behind this are:
Indeed, travel isn’t all about checking off the bucket list, the experiences help in self empowerment and also making memories. To be honest, the Strepy-Thieu Funicular Boat Lift is one of those things that absolutely was never in my bucket list. But after our adventure, I think that it’s an absolute must see if you are travelling through Belgium. It’s definitely a tourist attraction in its own right!
This is one of the tallest funicular boat lifts which measures a soaring 102m in height and the only one of its kind in the world.
When we arrived to experience the Strepy-Thieu Funicular boat lift , it was a beautiful summer afternoon. And while we were approaching the boat lift, the building dominated the sky-line. In addition, I have to mention that when I was standing at the feet of this structure, I was indeed impressed by its height, volume and the superb panorama of the site and the region. Actually, just being there and watching the boats go through and up, was enough. Undeniably, this is brilliant piece of engineering!
Furthermore, we started the adventure with a train ride to one of the boat lifts. To begin with, we had a guided tour of the machine room. The guide gave clear explanations in English, French, Dutch and even proposed German. The Belgians for sure know how to make a great presentation! Again, we got on the boat and went down the canal to the boat lift followed by a boat lock.
On the top of the list, I think that no matter how much time you spend on planning and researching on a trip, it’s important to know the provisions on board. Certainly, in the boat, there are drinks and waffles for sale available. I’m sure that you are aware of the Belgian chocolates, beers and waffles. While in Belgium, eat chocolate and waffles and enjoy life. On a lighter note, don’t worry about the vacation weight gain. On board also there is clean a bathroom.
Finally, after about an hour and a half on the boat, we got back to the lift where we went in and up an elevator. The walk back to the elevator had allot of information about the construction of the lift. Indeed, seeing the machine room for the large lift was incredible. This is a great experience and those who love constructions and the architecture feats, shouldn’t miss this tour! This a marvel of a modern and a shining example of Belgian Engineering!
