How To Save Money While Traveling
How To Save Money While Traveling

Did you know that you can save money while travelling? The following are some of the tips:

 1. Use Flight Comparison Sites

The flight comparison sites take off the hassle of going to every airline website. These websites great for comparing flight options and finding deals.

They allow you to book flights, hotels and car hire, often giving extra discounts if you combine them.

To add on that, direct flights are typically much more expensive than flights with a stop over or connection. Extra hours of travel time could equal  some savings on your ticket price.

2. Don’t Wait Until The Last Minute

Whether it’s doing our holiday shopping or preparing for a vacation, we hold it off until the very last minute. Unfortunately, this could run you into headaches, expenses and other problems.

It’s true that there are sometimes amazing last minute travel deals, but in general you’ll save a lot of money by booking in advance. In fact, if you leave it till the last minute, the flight costs are often sky high. But if you plan ahead and book the right way, the savings can soar.

3. Travel Lightly

Our Travel bags

Every traveler aspires to pack light. Personally, I have not been successful. I can’t help but to bring everything! Packing light has been a process.

Travelers have different approaches from downsizing the luggage forcing themselves to carry less, to focus on clothing, others  focus on toiletries. The less you bring along, the more you can save on your travel costs, especially if you’re flying on a budget airline.

4. Travel in the Off  Season

Off season in Mombasa Kenya

Traveling to major tourist destinations in the off season is the best. This is because you can experience all the major sights without having to elbow other tourists and save loads of money as well.

During this season, you experience no queues at the dinner tables, buying flight tickets for half the price, and not waiting for  hours to get into a museum.

Obviously, flexible travel dates aren’t a possibility for everyone, but if you can plan for your vacation, consider going during lower season. Also in this season, you can enjoy some of the best places in the world, without allot of people fighting with you for the perfect photo of a main attraction.

5. Eat Like a Local

Greek Food

Every big city will bring you a huge diversity of meal types.

Go ahead and explore the iconic attractions, but stay clear of restaurants located within the vicinity, as these tend to be tourist traps frequented by travellers. It’s highly likely that the prices are high or the food is mediocre, which explains the absence of  the locals.

I would strongly recommend that you get out of the centre of these cities and discover the best places where you can eat. Please, do not be stuck into these restaurants. Whether you’re in Paris or Nairobi, it’s a good idea to find out where the locals are eating.

6. Use Public Transportation

Walking Shoes

Most cities around the world offer great public transportation options. Whether it’s trains, buses, trams or metros, there is often plenty of money to be saved by making use of these facilities rather than using a rental car or taxis.

These cities also offer discounts on public transportation if you purchase a travel pass. Certainly, you will potentially be able to save a lot of money.

This is a tip that can be pretty intimidating, especially if you’re in a country where your language is different.

You can combine walking and public transport. Walking is good for your body and mind, but it’s also pretty great for your wallet too. While walking, you’ll see more and soak up more of the local culture. For those places where walking doesn’t make sense, give biking a try.

7. Research

Personally, research is my  fun part of traveling.

I think that spending some time to figure out the practical stuff like routes, budgets, and itineraries, your efforts will pay off. This is because you will have a less stressful trip.

The following are some of the areas you need to research to save some money while traveling:

  • Compare prices because sometimes it’s cheaper to book direct with the hotel. Also majority of these hotels offers transport from and to the airports
  • If the hotel is accessible by means of public transport
  • Consider if the passes are worth it because some excludes the top attractions
