The Cretaquarium Experience in Crete
Cretaquarium, Crete

Cretaquarium is not a large aquarium but it has extensive marine life.

With over 50,000 animals from across the world, there can never be a shortage of incredible things to see in an Aquarium.

My husband and I, are fans of aquariums of any kind and size. Indeed, this was the reason why we chose to visit.

✦ What To Expect From Cretaquarium

This aquarium is located near the town of Gournes on the island of Crete.

It is not big in size but it emphasizes Mediterranean sea life. This is a must-see if you want to have an idea of the Mediterranean sea life.

The tanks allow great visibility and you can take quite some time just watching the fish cruise around.

Mind you, taking a closer look in an aquarium has its rewards. In the sense that you might see something, you’ve never noticed before or learned something new.

✦ The species of fish in Cretaquarium

Cretaquarium has many species of fish, sharks, octopus, mussels, turtles, just to mention but a few. Some species are indigenous to the Mediterranean sea and can be seen in the wild whilst out snorkeling, and others are from different seas giving a good variety.

My favorite part is the half-circular tank which allows a variety of vantage points for viewing the sharks.

✦ The beach 100m from the Cretaquarium

We then headed to the beach which is just some meters away. This took us through a derelict military base. It was an interesting and eerie walk for us.

Crete Island

The sandy beach is about 100 meters away. has very clean and warm water. But I have to mention that there are no special facilities, for instance, the changing rooms and washrooms.

Some Tips

  • It is easily accessible through public transport, although you will need to make a 15-minute walk to get to the aquarium
  • There is a big parking lot and it’s free
  • There is a seafood restaurant next to the Cretaquarium

Thank you for stopping by and stay positive!
