Away from the hustle and bustle of the seaside towns and resorts of Crete, we decided to do a road trip to the mountains. It was a scenic drive to a hidden treasure; the Botanical Park and Gardens Of Crete.
The Botanical Park and Gardens of Crete
This park is 20 hectares and is on a mountain side and in a valley. It’s a well organised park and the gardens are well laid out. It identifies botanical plants, their names and uses.
The Botanical Park and Gardens Of Crete is very unique because it has three altitude levels which includes:
- The alpine
Certainly, these altitudes make it a delight to wander around the park.
Best Road Trip in Crete
Regardless of where you start your vacation, you’ll find an exciting scenic route to the Botanical Park and Gardens Of Crete and this will end up being your best road trip while in Crete.
The views alone are worth the trip and it’s immensely serene and tranquil up there. All we could hear were the calls of the peacocks, ducks and birds.
How Are the Botanical Park and Gardens
They are a lot of different plants, shrubs and trees that are growing here from all over the globe. For instance the eucalyptus, to tea and coffee just to mention but a few.
We visited the gardens during the summer and therefore the plants were blooming beautifully. We walked up and down the mountain.
The descent and ascend are quite steep. It isn’t just a stroll in the park as you might expect.
Descending into the valley part of the Botanical Park and Gardens of Crete, we found a lake surrounded by citrus and orange trees.
We then walked into a small animals park for domestic animals which was quite impressive.
The Walk in the Park and Gardens
The walk is quite undulating and you need to be in a reasonable shape to get around, but well worth the tour.
There is a lot of shaded parts around the park and there are ample benches around the track to sit and enjoy the scents and sights from. To sum up, the gardens are beautiful.
After our nearly 2 hour walk through this charming setting, the walk ended up once again back at the reception area.

A Travel Qoute
“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.” ― John Muir
