✦ The Ingredients
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 1 egg
- 3 cups of all-purpose wheat flour
- 1 and a quarter cups of warm water
- 3 spoons of butter
- The sunflower oil
✦ The Steps For Making the Chapati
1 ✦ Melt the 3 spoons of butter.
2 ✦ Put the melted butter in a bowl and then add the salt and the sugar. Then stir until they dissolve.
3 ✦ In another bowl, whip up the egg.
4 ✦ Then add the whipped egg to the mixture and stir it.
5 ✦ Next, add the 3 cups of the all-purpose wheat flour and mix it.
6 ✦ Now add 1/2 cup of the warm water and start to knead.
7 ✦ Keep adding the water to the mixture while kneading until the dough is thick and soft.
8 ✦ Keep kneading the dough for 5 minutes and sprinkle some wheat flour if needed.
9 ✦ Add a teaspoon of the sunflower oil to the dough and keep on kneading.
10 ✦ Next, cover the dough and leave it for 1 hour.
✦ How To Make The Soft Layered Chapati
11✦ After 1 hour, dust a tray with some flour.
12 ✦ Then divide the dough into parts. Then shape them into ball-like shapes and then place them on the tray.
13 ✦ Use a rolling pin to roll each one of them, one at a time into a circular shape.
14 ✦ Then brush or spread the vegetable oil on the top.
15 ✦ Roll the oiled chapati until you have a shape that is similar to a rope.
16 ✦Then coil it and press it to make it flat.
Note: To make the work easier, do the steps 13, 14, and 15 to each one of the parts first, then head to step 16.
✦ The Final Stage
16 ✦Heat up the pan to 300 – 350°c.
17 ✦ Use the rolling pin to make circular shaped chapatis, each at a time.
18 ✦ Then place the rolled out chapatis on the pan, each at a time. And spread the sunflower oil on each of the sides until they are golden brown.
19 ✦ When each is ready, you put it in a plastic wrap or in a covered container.
20 ✦ Leave them for 20 minutes. Then they are ready to be served.
✦ How to Serve the Chapati
- They are served by either the beef curry or chicken curry or even just a stew.
- They can also be warmed up and served as a snack or for breakfast.
✦ Some Tips For The Dough
- You can choose either to use eggs or not
- Choose the type of wheat flour that you prefer ( white or brown )
- Do not use the self-rising flour to make the chapatis
- You can also choose to leave the dough overnight
